Мизесом при поддержке деловых кругов и правительства, заинтересованных в лучшем понимании динамики развития хозяйства страны; создатели во многом ориентировались на аналогичные американские и европейские организации и в частности, на Harvard Committee of Economic Research; институт занимался тщательным исследованием экономической динамики и еже-месячно публиковал бюллетень с оценками и прогнозами; первым директором института был Ф. Хайек; с 1931 to 1938 его возглавлял О. Моргенштерн; оригинальное название Oesterreichisches Institut für Konjunkturforschung)
